CLUB OLYMPIA JUDO PLAYERS RANKED TOP IN THE NATION


Members from the Club Olympia judo team competed in a national and an international tournament this summer with their results earning them top ranking in the United States.
Four Club Olympia judo players are now ranked in the top six competitors on the point roster in the United States in their respective divisions.

The judo team first traveled to Irvine, California to compete in the US Junior National judo championships. Cody Kollmann finished third in the boys -44kg 13-14 year old division, ranking him at sixth in the nation.

The second tournament, 2010 U.S. Junior Open was held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. With 32 countries and the United States represented, three students placed in the top four. Grant Johnson had the highest finish winning the silver medal in the young men’s -73 kg 15-16 year old division. This ranks him as one of the top three players in the nation. Hunter Kollmann won third place and the bronze medal ranking him fourth in the boys -43kg 9-10 year old division. Hannah Wright finished fourth in the young women’s 17-20 year old -52kg division, earning her the sixth ranking in the United States. Spencer Depies, 2009 national champion also competed fairing well in a new division.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment coming from a small city in Wisconsin,” stated Lynn Roethke, the club’s coach and Olympic silver medalist in judo. “We are competing head to head with the strongest players in the United States, and because of our results we are now among them.”

U.S. Open Judo Competitors


Three members of the Club Olympia judo team competed in the U.S Junior Open Judo Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Thirty-six countries participated in the international tournament including local competitors.

CLUB OLYMPIA JUDO TEAM TOP THREE IN THE UNITED STATES


The Club Olympia judo team traveled to San Francisco July 11-12 to compete in the Junior National Judo Championships. Over six hundred competitors from throughout the United States participated in the event. Eight competitors represented Fond du Lac, bringing home a National Champion and four other top three finishes. Spencer Depies was crowned national champion in the boy’s intermediate division. Cody Kollmann and Mitchell Raube won second place and a silver medal with Grant Johnson and Mason Steffes winning the third place bronze medal. Hannah Wright captured fourth. Hunter Kollmann and Lauren DeSmidt also competed.

Club Olympia Judo’s Spring Competitions Finish with 8 State Champions


The Club Olympia judo team competed in two regional and two state competitions this spring in preparation for the National Championships held July 10-12 in San Francisco.

At the Midwest Championships held in Chicago, the club earned 11 top three finishes. Winning first place was Mitchell Raube, Spencer Depies, Mason Steffes and Lauren DeSmidt. Hannah Wright, Michael Buetow and Lynn Roethke finished second. Bronze medals were brought home by Cody Kollmann, Hunter Kollmann, Grant Johnson and McKinnley Buetow.

The welcome Mat Open saw 18 Club Olympia players taking home 8 first places, 5 seconds and 1 third place finish. Mitchell Raube, Hunter Kollmann, Mitchell VanHerwynen, Grant Johnson, McKinnley Buetow, Mason Steffes, Adam Ford and Alex Benishek finished first. Second place was won by Kyle Kutcher, Michael Buetow, Lauren Desmidt and Eric Boatman. Kyle Handy won third.

The team traveled to St. Paul, MN next for the regional championship where Hannah Wright captured two first place finishes along with the women’s grand champion trophy. Other first were earned by Hunter Kollmann, Cody Kollmann, Lauren DeSmidt and Mitchell VanHerwynen. Grant Johnson and Mitchell Raube placed second.

The UW Stevens Point hosted their annual tournament where Grant Johnson, Hannah Wright and Hunter Kollmann won gold medals. Kyle Handy captured a silver medal while Kyle Kutcher finished with the bronze.

The State Championships were held in West Bend on May 2. Club Olympia Judo won 8 State titles. Grant Johnson at the age of 15 won two State Championship titles, in both his age group and in the Men’s division. State Judo Champions also include Cody Kollmann, Spencer Depies, Mitchell VanHerwynen, Hannah Wright, Lauren DeSmidt and Justin Magoline. Placing second were Kyler Konen, Connor Reams, Mason Steffes, Shelby Leicht and Troy Kollmann. Mitchell Raube, Hunter Kollmann, Alex Benishek and Eric Boatman finished third.

Midwest Championships 2009










Club Olympia traveled to Chicago March 21st to participate in the Midwest Championships for Judo held in Waukegan Illinois. The club had 13 Joduka in several divisions spanning all age groups - boys and girls. The most exciting division was the women's elite 135 pound division in which Club Olympia's own Sensei, Lynn Roethke, came out of semi-retirement to participate.
Lynn finished with a hard fought 2nd place after throwing 2 separate, quick Ippons and 3 full length matches against the second highest ranked woman in the country. The details of Lynn's Matches can be found on the US Judo Website Here.
The Club took four 1st place finishes earned by - Mitchell Raube
, Spencer Depies
, Mason Steffes
and Lauren De Smidt. 2nd place finishes were earned by Lynn Roethke, Hannah Wright
and Michael Buetow.
Four 3rd place trophies were taken by Hunter Kollmann, Cody Kollmann
, Grant Johnson and McKinnley Buetow. Other competitors were Kyle Handy
and Adam Ford. In total 37 matches were fought with 20 wins and 17 losses.
